To Greet or not to Greet

Handshaking is among the common forms of greeting for business around the world. As well, it is not uncommon for persons to also greet each other with a light embrace in business and social gatherings. In some culture an embrace is the preferred norm and form of greeting. To not exchange a handshake within the context of standard protocols, can very easily be interpreted as disrespectful and defined as discourteous, rude and impolite.

Mindful of the grave consequences Covid-19 (coronavirus) and the propensity to exacerbate its effects with “contact” forms of greeting, wouldn’t it be more appropriate to just bow as a form of greeting, or clasp both hands as a sign of acknowledgement and respect when greeting, until such time as we can safely return to “contact” forms of greeting?
